Electromagnetic pollution in the bedroom can affect your sleep and your health. This practical guide shows you how to...
Restful sleep is the foundation of health, energy and wellbeing. But what if an invisible source of disturbance in your bedroom impairs that valuable regeneration? Electromagnetic fields (EMF), often referred to as electrosmog, are ubiquitous in modern households. In the bedroom in particular, where we are supposed to regenerate, they can represent an underestimated burden. In this article you will learn how electrosmog arises in the bedroom, what effects it can have on your sleep, and which practical measures turn your sleeping area into a low-radiation place of wellbeing.
Electrosmog is a colloquial term for the totality of artificially generated electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields. They arise through the operation and standby mode of almost all electrical devices - from the bedside lamp to the radio alarm clock through to the Wi-Fi router. Our body is a finely tuned bioelectric system. Heartbeat, brain waves (for example the delta waves important for sleep) and nerve impulses are controlled by minimal electrical currents. External artificial fields can disturb these natural processes and put the organism into a state of mild stress, even if we are not consciously aware of it.
To protect yourself effectively you need to know the sources. Here are the biggest culprits:
The good news: you do not have to give up all comfort in order to improve your sleeping environment considerably. Start with these steps:
The most effective step is reduction. Remove all electrical devices from the bedroom that are not strictly necessary. Use a battery-powered alarm clock (ideally without an illuminated display). Swap the bedside lamp for a battery-powered LED candle or a torch. An absolute no-go: the smartphone as an alarm clock on the bedside table, or even under the pillow.
If devices such as a television or computer have to stay in the room, disconnect them from the power completely at night. Pull the plug or use a switchable power strip that you turn off before going to bed. More elegant still are mains disconnectors. These are installed in the fuse box and automatically disconnect the bedroom circuit as soon as no current is being drawn. That way no voltage and no fields remain on the wiring at night.
Set up a schedule on your router that switches the Wi-Fi off automatically at night (for example from 10 pm to 6 am). The same applies to the base station of your DECT telephone - switch it off at night or replace it with a low-radiation model (ECO mode plus) that only transmits while you are on a call.
Electromagnetic fields decrease sharply with distance from the source. So keep as much distance as possible from any remaining devices. One extra metre can already reduce the field strength drastically. Take particular care that no active device is near your head.
In addition to switching devices off, you can support your body during its regeneration phase. This is where products such as the ZES Bodyguard come in. This technology is not based on shielding but on supporting the body's own regulatory capacities. The Bodyguard is simply worn on the body and can help harmonise the effects of technically generated fields on the organism. That way your body can concentrate better at night on its actual task: deep recovery and repair.
What can you expect when you put these measures into practice?
Your bedroom should be a sanctuary of calm. By reducing electrosmog you create the optimal physical conditions for deep, undisturbed and regenerative sleep. Begin with simple steps such as switching off the Wi-Fi and removing the smartphone. Consider further solutions such as mains disconnectors or harmonising technologies like the ZES Bodyguard. Listen to your body - it will thank you with more vitality, a better mood and greater quality of life. Start optimising your sleeping area today, because restful sleep is the most powerful health resource we have.
