Check the earthing of your socket – in seconds

Grounding sheets, grounding mats and grounding plugs are connected to earth via the protective earth of the socket. If the protective earth is not connected or is interrupted, there is no connection. The socket tester shows you beforehand whether the socket is earthed – a good match for the grounding plug and the grounding sheet.

How to check a socket

  1. Plug the tester into the socket.
  2. Read the three LEDs and compare them with the table below (or on the device).
  3. Unplug the tester.

The indications

LED 1 LED 2 LED 3 Meaning
● ● ○ Correctly wired
● ○ ○ Protective earth missing
○ ● ● Live and earth reversed
● ○ ● Live and neutral reversed
○ ● ○ Neutral missing

LED 1 is the left LED when the printing is readable in front of you.

Good to know

  • Schuko sockets are not polarised: depending on which way round the tester is plugged in, it shows “live and neutral reversed”. With Schuko this is not a wiring fault.
  • The tester does not detect neutral and earth being reversed and does not measure earth resistance.
  • It does not replace an inspection by a qualified electrician. If it shows a fault, have the socket checked by an electrician.

RCD test (30 mA)

The “RCD TEST” button creates a small residual current. A working 30 mA RCD will trip and the circuit is switched off. Only press the button deliberately: every device on this circuit switches off, e.g. a computer or fridge. Then switch the RCD in the fuse box back on. If it does not trip, have the installation checked by an electrician.
